Garden Journals
These fun and decorative journals will encourage your students in creative writing as they record their garden activities.
SUPPLIES
v Composition notebook, scrapbooks or actual journals with hardback covers. v Decoupage glue v Sponge brush or paint brush v Wrapping papers, tissue papers, old text books, empty seed packets, pictures from garden magazines, stickers etc. v Raffia v Craft bugs, and gem sequins v Container of wet wipes v Styrofoam plate v Hot glue gun and glue sticks
STEP 1 As you gather your supplies shop dollar stores for journals, scrapbooks, composition notebooks and stickers. Select papers and magazines pictures that go alone with your garden theme.
STEP 2
Pour decoupage glue on Styrofoam plate for students. Liberally apply the glue on the outside cover of your journal. Working on one section at a time, tear different size papers and place them randomly on the cover of journal. Press down the papers with your fingers while adding decoupage glue and more paper as you go. It is important to put enough glue between each layer or your paper may bubble. Have students frequently clean their hands with wet wipes to prevent debri build up on their fingers which will get on their project.
STEP 3
Once your cover is layered with papers begin developing your final garden design, be creative. When the cover is completely dry repeat this process on the back cover. This is not necessary but it will make a nicer finished project. It will probably take two classes to do the front and back of journal. Don’t decoupage the inside cover as this will be too much glue and it will buckle your journal. After project is completely dry embellish with raffia, craft bugs, and gem sequins utilizing hot glue to secure the items.
Jazz up your journal with creativity!
TEACHER TIPS: This project can be easily made into two sessions. Project cost will be approximately $1.50 per journal. If paintbrushes are being used to apply the decoupage glue, be sure to thoroughly clean the brushes with soap and water for future projects. Reassure students that they cannot mess up this project. Any mistakes can be fixed by gluing over area with more paper.
This project gets a 4 on a five point messy scale (but its fun and EASY!).
