Step IconSTEP 1

You will need to use card stock stationary which comes in a large variety of colors.  Plain white will also work.  Gather all supplies and be creative when looking for ways to save money.  One way to save time and money is to have your kids tear paper instead of using craft scissors for a rustic look.
Leaves can also be used as stamps to save on the expense of rubber stamps.  Stamped finger prints made into bugs and butterflies is a creative way to personalize a card.  Photos taken of your students at work in the garden can be photo copied for another unique way to decorate.  Students can hand deliver cards as another way to save money.

Step IconSTEP 2

Encourage your students to be unique with their designs so no two cards will be alike while at the same time keeping it simple.  Be careful not to make the cards too thick if you are mailing them as this could be a problem.

Layer cards with decorative paper and pictures by using glue sticks. When doing stamp designs remind your students not to wiggle the stamps as the design will turn out blurry.  Go straight down and straight up with the stamps using firm pressure for a clean finish.  In order to keep from wasting cards encourage the kids to repair any mistakes by layering more paper or cover with stickers.  Keep fingers clean from ink with wet wipes as not to smear their cards.

 Step IconSTEP 3

Finish off cards by having each student sign their work on the back of the cards for their own original ‘hallmark’ design.

Bring the garden to others by sending them an

original Garden Greeting Card.

Apple IconTEACHER TIPS
This is a good project to get your students excited about sending thank you cards to volunteers and sponsors.  Cards can also be used for invitations, meeting reminders and fund raiser announcements.  It is best to let students design just the outside of the card and later print up the information needed for the inside of the card and glue in when needed.  It would be easier to make up a lot of cards ahead of time and save for when the need arises.

This project averages 20 cents a card or less.  You can often find scrap book supplies on sale for half off at the major craft stores. Everything I purchased was half off so watch for sales.  Be sure and get the stationary that comes with envelopes as they usually come in a variety pack of 70 cards.  Textured cards will add to the quality of the card that the recipient will want to save.

This project gets a 1 on a five point messy scale!
