Creative Flower Pots

This activity encourages creativity by allowing students to use a variety of materials to create their own spontaneous work of art. This is a fun outdoor project with quick results.
SUPPLIES
- Clay Pots
- Ceramic Tile Mastic (also known as tile adhesive)
- Play Sand
- Variety of Objects such as sea shells, flat marbles, recycled glass, small polished rocks or pebbles.
- Plastic knife for spreading
STEP 1
Have your materials out and ready to use. Spread the tile adhesive on the pot rather thickly. The adhesive can dry quickly, so apply it in small sections at a time.
STEP 2
Embed your objects deeply in the adhesive. Try to place objects close together. Be spontaneous, a set pattern is not necessary.
STEP 3
Carefully pack sand over the entire pot while the adhesive is still sticky. Shake off any excess sand. Set pot out to dry in the sun and now it’s ready for your favorite plant!
This project takes approximately fifteen minutes, depending on your pot size. The cost is about a dollar per student (less if you utilize found objects). This activity is recommended for 3rd grade and up.
TEACHER TIPS:
- This project can be adapted for different thematic units, such as: sea life (shells), geology (rocks) & recycling (found objects).
- Students can go on a scavenger hunt at home or outdoors to gather materials to make their pot creative!
CLEAN UP:
Simple soap and water is needed for clean up. I give it a 3 ½ on a five point messy scale.
