Step IconSTEP 1 Garden Ball 2

Have your materials out and ready to use.  You will need a large quantity of various objects.  This project has a lot of area to cover, so you may need more than you think.

Step IconSTEP 2 Garden Ball 3

Put a generous amount of liquid nails adhesive on the inner lip of the pot.  Place bowling ball in the pot with the holes down.  Apply additional glue along the outside edge of the pot as shown in the picture.

Step IconSTEP 3 Garden Ball 4

Spread tile adhesive on the pot very thickly.  The adhesive can dry  quickly, so apply it in small sections at a time.

Step IconSTEP 4 Garden Ball 5

Embed your objects deeply in the adhesive.  Try to place objects close together.  Be spontaneous, a set pattern is not necessary.  Work each area quickly until completed.

Step IconSTEP 5 Garden Ball 6

Carefully pack sand over the entire pot while the adhesive is still sticky.  Set pot out to dry in the sun for at least 30 minutes.  Use a soft paint brush to lightly remove the excess sand.   You may want to paint the pot a festive color.  At least two coats would be needed.

Note: After 24-hours, use a small putty knife to carefully scrap dried adhesive off objects.  Be sure not to remove too much of the adhesive.  Use a damp cloth to lightly rub until clean being cautious not to dislodge the objects until completely dry.

This project takes approximately one hour.  The cost is between five and ten  dollars per child (less if you utilize found objects).  This activity is recommended for 3rd grade and up with adult assistance.

Now it’s ready for your favorite garden spot!

 Apple IconTEACHER TIPS:

J     Using old clothes to work in is a must.

J     This project is bulky and heavy which requires adult assistance.

J     The fun part is collecting craft items.  Use family and friends as resources. Local bowling alley’s may donate damaged balls.

J     G arden balls look great next to some foliage or in a bird bath giving your garden a festive look!

CLEAN UP:

Simple soap and water is needed for clean up.  I give it a 4 on a five point messy scale.
